Paint 101: Finishes
Paint is the easiest way to update a space or furniture. Here are my tips on all things PAINT!
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PAINT FINISHES?
Gloss
Easy to clean
Highlights imperfections
Typically used on baseboards or high traffic areas
Furniture is another option for this finish
Semi-Gloss
Easier to clean
We typically use this finish on cabinets and doors (this advice differs from the link, but this is our professional opinion) we like a lower reflective sheen for these items.
Good option for furniture as well
Eggshell
This is our go to sheen finish. The technology behind latex allows this finish to be almost as durable as oil based while not having as many VOC (off gassing).
Mildly durable
Easy to clean
Lower reflective value
We typically use this on walls (if trying to lower budget can be used on the ceiling) The more times the painters change their brushes the more the project costs. Sheens count as a brush change not just paint color changes.
Can be used in high traffic areas for ease of cleanability
Matte
Easy to clean
Updated approach to eggshell with less reflective finish
Used in low to moderate traffic areas
Flat
Doesn't highlight imperfections well
No shine
Not as easy to clean
Typically used on the ceiling since it is not reflective
